Dementia is an increasingly common condition. According to the Alzheimer's Society there are approximately 800,000 people in the UK with this condition.

Just the mention of dementia  is enough to terrify and upset most people, however just as there have been major improvements over the last few years to the way in which physical illnesses are treated, the way in which we care for people with dementia has seen major changes too.

Good dementia care is all about looking at the person, and not just  focusing on their condition.

Dementia is the collective name for a group of related symptoms associated with a progressive decline of the brain and its abilities. There are many different types of dementia, the most well known form is Alzheimer's disease which accounts for 50 to 60% of all cases. Dementia is one of the leading causes of disability and dependency for the elderly. Although each person will experience dementia in their own way, most of those affected will eventually become unable to properly care for themselves and will need assistance with some aspects of daily life.

A persons dementia should be managed as you would any other disease. It may affect their day to day activities and what they can and cannot do but it does not define who they are.

At The Dales our dedicated team of carers and support staff are specifically trained to deal with the challenges that come when caring for a person with dementia. Because dementia is a progressive condition our dedicated and experienced staff regularly review our residents care plans to ensure that all their care requirements are being met and fully supported.
